State workers union SEIU Local 1000 carrying the "Honor Diversity" banner. There was diversity of person and of Union here-- The ILWU(Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Union), CWA (Communication Workers), Local 250 (Healthcare workers), and the Teacher's Union, to name just a few.

When asked about her presence at the march, state worker Adrian Suffin (center, behind banner) said "This is going to be a war for the rich that will be fought by the poor. In these tough times, resources would be better spent for things like healthcare."

Katarina Davis-Delvalle, an RN who now works for SEIU in Los Angeles carrying a sign reminiscent of famed boxer Mohammed Ali's "Ain't No Viet-Kong ever called me nigger!" statement during the Viet Nam War. Then, as now, our national fabric unravelled while billions were spent on war or, as now, preparations for it. Lyndon Johnson couldn't pay for "The Great Society" and the Viet Nam war at the same time, and George Bush won't be able to balance his version of it, either. What is it about politicians from Texas.....!

"Globalize Justice, not war". On January 13th, over 100 union leaders from across the country met in Chicago to form U.S. Labor Against War. They approved a statement of unity that contained the following statements:

"Whereas union members and leaders have the responsibility to inform all working people about the issues that affect their lives, jobs and families, and to be heard in the national debate on these issues; and

"Whereas the principal victims of any military action in Iraq will be the sons and daughters of working class families serving in the military who will be put in harm's way, and innocent Iraqi civilians who have already suffered so much, and

"Whereas we have no quarrel with the ordinary working class men, women and children of Iraq or any other country; and whereas the billions of dollars spent to stage and execute this war are being taken away from our schools, hospitals, housing and Social Security, and

"Whereas, the war is a pretext for attacks on labor, civil, immigrant and human rights at home; and

"Whereas, Bush's drive for war serves as a cover and distraction for the sinking economy, corporate corruption, and layoffs and

"Whereas such military action is predicted actually to increase the likelihood of retaliatory terrorist acts; and

"Whereas, there is no convincing link between Iraq and Al Queda or the attacks on September 11, and neither the Bush administration nor the UN inspectors have demonstrated that Iraq poses a real threat to Americans; and

"Whereas, U.S. military action against Iraq threatens the peaceful resolution of disputes among states, jeopardizing the safety and security of the entire world, including Americans; and

"Whereas labor has had an historic role in fighting for justice; therefore

"We hereby establish the "U.S. Labor Against the War (USLAW) and

"Resolve that U.S. Labor Against the War stands firmly against Bush's war drive..."

The Radical Cheerleaders for Peace taking a break before resuming the job of entertaining the passing throng. When the crowd is such that it takes 4 hours to cover a mile, entertainment is appreciated.

SEIU Local 250 staffperson Maria Griffith leads a shout as we march through the corridors of wealth and power. The walk took us from the waterfront at Embarcadero Plaza through the financial district and ultimately to the Civic Center, seat of government in S.F.
