S.F.
City Hall viewed through the crowd at around 3 o'clock. Despite starting
the march at around 11, it required 4 hours to get here, a distance
of about a mile from the starting point. Various speakers had come
and gone by the time we arrived, but others took their place and there
was no shortage of inspiration. In the corridor between a row of trees,
information tables were set up, with petitions, flyers, buttons, position
statements, etc. |

Horses
pulling a cart covered with slogans critical of Tom Ridge, Director
of the Department of Homeland Security. For some reason, though the
words "homeland security" should sound safe and comforting,
in the context of a government department, they sound menacingly Orwellian.
Though I do not want to live in fear that angry persons will hijack
U.S. airplanes and blow things up, I also do not want to live in fear
that angry government persons will hijack our tax dollars for their
own purposes and cause the implosion of major social and environmental
programs |

One thing that
happens at a demonstration is the spread of information and assistance
with mass projects. Here the man on the left is requesting that Sharon
and I fax to congresspersons copies of a letter he has written. Sharon
Martinez (center) was the organizer of our political group (she collected
the money and arranged bus passage) and took responsibility for agreeing
to this request. |
