Linda
Garcia, age 9, and a student at Thomas Edison was 'holding the line'
and wearing her "My Dad is a UNION ELECTRICIAN" T-shirt.
Her dad, Louie Garcia, a Local 340 electrician, said: "I'm here
in solidarity, to show support for the grocery clerks. Safeway posted
their profits from last year and they made a lot of money, and now
they are trying to take away their worker's healthcare." |

Brian
Caldeira (CSEA staff and UAW member) participated with several other
CSEA staffers in the morning picket. Their presence signals the new
direction SEIU 1000/CSEA is taking following last fall's election
of a reform slate of candidates dedicated to organizing and member
activism. |

"I
won't shop here!" was this man's statement as he left Safeway's
parking lot. He had been given the UFCW flyer minutes earlier when
he drove through the picket line. |

"I
won't shop here" is one of the best weapons we have against unfair
corporate giants. If no one shopped at Wal-Mart, our non-shopping
would drive it out of existence. A socially-conscious screening of
all the businesses we deal with based on how they treat their employees,
what they do to the environment, and similar concerns would make it
possible for ethical, worker-friendly businesses to prosper while
their cheap and shifty competitors fail. Shop for a better world and
don't spend your money at stores that promote a race to the bottom
for the working class. HOLD THE LINE! |
