In a stirring show of solidarity, UHW-West members joined Sutter workers in picketing Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland on May 7th. Workers at the Sutter-owned facility have been working without a contract for over a year.

Chief Shop Steward Raj Dayal and COPE Chair Sharon Martinez from Mercy General in Sacramento were among those supporting Sutter UHW members on the picket line. It was only about five years ago that a successful contract fight by SEIU Local 250 (now UHW) members at CHW hospitals in the Bay Area led to the successful organization of the union in Sacramento CHW hospitals.

"If you take one of us on, you take all of us on!" SEIU UHW-west President Sal Roselli delivering a message to the Sutter Corporation.

"A community-based hospital should serve the community, not corporate profit!" State Assemblymember Alberto Torrico, 20th Assembly District. Assemblywoman Wilma Chan was also on hand for this event.

SEIU UHW members were joined by members of the California Nurses Association and the Teamsters union.

SEIU is now 1.8 million members strong, and is the largest, fastest-growing union in North America. It is SEIU's goal to "Restore the American Dream" for America's working people by uniting more workers with coordinated bargaining standards and a campaign to stop companies like Wal-Mart from destroying jobs through outsourcing and driving down pay and benefit standards. (From SEIU "Unite to Win" campaign).
