"This
is an incredible victory for working families. We have shown that
when workers stand together, we can beat this economy, this health
care crisis, and the cynicism that said that basic needs of working
families cannot be met in this current economic climate!"
Local 1877 Union President Mike Garcia describing the historic
gains achieved by the new contract. The 5-year agreement will provide
the majority of janitors with family health care by the end of the
contract. Janitors currently receiving $6.95/hour will receive a
$1.75/hour increase phased in over 5 years. This amounts to a 25%
raise, $4,000 more per year by the end of the contract. A loophole
in the former contract which allowed subcontracting is now closed.

Elisabeth,
one of the great SEIU staffers behind this successful Local 1877 campaign.
Despite lack of sleep and an ever-changing game plan, she remained
cheerful and deserves a share of the credit for this victory. Now
she returns to Washington, D.C. and her next assignment. |

Local
1877 staffer Samuel Rodriguez and son being interviewed after contract
ratification. Samuel was a central figure in organizing and leading
marches and chants, and was seen diffusing potential conflicts with
police and security guards on more than one occasion. Employers
don't just decide on their own to pay workers more--It took many
weeks of organizing, bargaining, marching, political action, and
finally a strike to get to this historic moment. Thanks to all!
