Assemblyman
Darrell Steinberg remembering his years as a Sacramento City Councilperson
with Mayor Joe Serna (now deceased). Serna was a former farm worker
and organizer with Cesar Chavez. Steinberg recalled Mayor Serna saying
"Seize the moment!" on various occasions and advised Governer

The
politicians who stood at the podium we know by name and we honor them
for appearing on this occasion and working for this cause. The vast
majority here, however, were people whose names we don't know. They
are the farm workers and others who marched 165 miles from Merced
and/or gathered at the Capitol to urge the governor to sign this bill
that would give farm workers a chance at livable wages and the benefits
many other workers have. |

Local 250 union rep Josie Summers marching down Franklin Blvd with
the "March for the Governor's Signature" on 8/24 with her
daughter, Chardonnay (in the middle). That's Gina Castillano from
Local 790 in Stockton "leading the way" with Josie. Gina
said that she was marching in solidarity with the farm workers because
it was 'important for farm workers to have union contracts'. |
