September
26/27, 2008: UHW members protest SEIU trusteeship hearing in San Mateo,
California. |
| |
Thousands
of UHW members from all over California protested a two-day hearing
held by SEIU in an attempt to justify placing UHW in trusteeship.
The charges against UHW were thrown out of court earlier in the year,
but SEIU still pursues them in an effort to take control of UHW and
stifle dissent within the union. |
D DAY
#1 OF TRUSTEESHIP HEARING & PROTEST IN SAN MATEO

Embattled
UHW President Sal Rosselli welcoming UHW members to the Kangaroo Court
from the outdoor stage during an intermission in the trusteeship hearing
sessions. "The cards are stacked against us," Sal noted,
in reference to the one-sided nature of the hearing. Referring to
evidence that Employers currently in bargaining with UHW are stalling
in the hope that SEIU appointees will take over UHW and give the employer
a better deal, Sal promised "We will never allow employers to
have a relationship with Andy Stern and SEIU-- Employers will have
to deal with us!" |

Thousands
of UHW members from the Hospital, Convalescent and Home Care divisions
all over California converged on the San Mateo County Event Center
to support UHW and protest the trusteeship hearing. |

Sal
shared the stage with nursing home workers from Windsor Healthcare,
a state-wide multi-million dollar nursing home chain. More than 700
union workers are engaged in a 2 day unfair labor practice strike
at 8 Windsor nursing homes in the Bay Area. At the time of this hearing,
Windsor had threatened to lock them out. |

The
red shirts on these UHW activists say "Hands Off Our Union!"
Interspersed with these were purple shirts worn by members of the
UHW/CHW bargaining team. This year's statewide contract bargaining
has been seriously undermined by SEIU's trusteeship threat.
