Back
at the Labor Day picnic, a display of union banners let us know who
all was there and represented. |

here by two smiling union women. |

Linda
Love, (Mobilization Coordinator for the Sacto. Central Labor Council)
and Marengu Marete (SEIU Local 1000), with Re-elect Governor Gray
Davis campaign literature in hand. This particular flyer compares
Gray Davis' record on labor issues with Bill Simon's stated positions.
Bill Simon does not appear to be a friend of labor. |

What
would a picnic be without food? Hamburgers and hotdogs grilled by
union volunteers were the lunch of the day. As a vegetarian, I am
hoping to see Vegi-burgers as an additional offering next year, but
I will start THAT campaign in 2003. |

There are many hard working people in the labor movement, none
more so than Bill Camp, whose list of activities includes (but is
not limited to) Executive Secretary of the Sacto. Central Labor
Council, active participant in Loaves and Fishes and United Way,
and Vice-chair of the Sacramento Workforce Investment Board (job
training). As MC for the Labor Day Picnic, he is shown here introducing
Assemblyman Daryl Steinberg. Steinberg has authored and/or supported
a lot of legislation favored by unions (such as a recent bill strengthing
work place safety laws) and is definitely a friend of labor.
Steinberg is also a friend of the Sacramento area, as demonstrated
by his authorship of AB 680, which would have reduced the competition
among cities and counties for the commercial development that generates
sales tax revenue but worsens traffic congestion, air pollution,
and urban sprawl. We all benefit from clean air, so I'd say AB680
was another labor-friendly bill, and I hope it passes next time!

Three
members of SEIU Local 250: Ellen Dillinger,Denise Creighton, and Sharon
Martinez. Last year at this time, we were trying to get enough support
in our workplace to hold a union election. Now we've got the union,
got the contract, and are working to enforce the contract with an
employer whose fighting every step of the way. In case anyone had
doubts about why we needed a union, they know now! |

A
member of the International Association of Machinists speaking to
the crowd about something that the field rep at my workplace calls
"a situation". The situation in this case is that of five
machinests working at a GM auto dealer in Folsom who walked out over
a contract issue. The request was made that people go out and support
these guys on their picket line. That's part of what this Labor Day
event is about-- learning what's happening to people in other unions
and how you can help. |

Michael
Lee Aft (American Federation of Teachers) and wife Janette and Christin.
This is their first year at this event, which Michael learned of in
his AFT newsletter. That is the ubiquitous JJ Jelincic in the background,
distributing the Labor day poster. |
