This good photo says it all, so I will say no more.

There were many political persons in evidence on this Labor occasion. Actually, I guess all union people are political persons because they've voted to be in a union and participate in work place decisions. Anyway, that is Dave Jones, city councilperson extraordinaire shaking hands with Bill Camp. Dave Jones supports the Living Wage campaign and is union and person-friendly and we should support him 100%. That is Assemblyman Daryl Steinberg in the center (also a good man, as previously stated), flanked by various incumbents or candidates from entities ranging from the SMUD board to the Mayor of West Sacramento. Anyone on this stage should at least be listened to, as they showed enough concern for our (labor's) opinion to show up for this labor union event.

Bill Camp introducing Sharon Davis, wife of Governor Gray Davis. Sharon spoke of her husband's efforts in behalf of Labor, which include but are not limited to: 1)Increasing the minimum wage such that it is now the 2nd highest in the nation, 2) Protecting the prevailing wage law, 3) Improving extended family leave, 4) Worker safety and housing regulations for farm workers. Her message was that with Governor Davis, organized labor has "not just a place at the table, but a voice in the room!"

Maybe I should just stop there, but since I went to the United Farm Workers March for the Governor's Signature (for SB 1736, which imposes binding arbitration on stalled contract talks between growers and unionized farmworkers) the week before this event, I have to say that I regret Gov. Davis' delay (as of 9/15/02) in signing this now watered-down bill. I feel certain that Davis' adversary, Bill Simon, would not sign it, either, nor would he have signed the labor-friendly legislation listed above, so I guess those are the cards that we have. *(Oct.5 update: Gov. Davis has now signed a bill allowing farm labor unions to request "mandatory mediation" for contract impasses. This bill is good for five years and applies to 75 cases).

It takes a lot of food and drink to provide lunch for all these union people and their friends and families, and here is where the sodas were cooled.

More food prepared by union volunteers from the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

  Lunch is served.

Bill Camp and Sharon Davis leading the "Four More Years" cheer.

"Entertainment for the kids will be provided!" and it was. In addition to this bouncy item, there was face painting, various kinds of ball, and a children's stage show.
