ILWU Local 17 gloriously represented by this banner. The ILWU has been in the news this summer because its members on West Coast docks have been stalled in contract negotiations with the Pacific Maritime Association. At issue is the employers demand to eliminate ILWU jobs through the introduction of new technology. At the time of this labor picnic, President Bush was threatening to intervene with troops in the event of a strike.

Me holding a stack of postcards that Local 250 members such as myself circulated in support of fired workers at the Cottonwood Health Center in Woodland. We collected around 300 signed cards. That's Cory Brown, political campaign manager in the center, looking relaxed despite three political campaigns in progress. Everett Burdan, dispatcher, business agent, and ILWU Local 17 member is on the right in the red shirt. From Everett we got a good account of what is happening with ILWU dockworkers on the West Coast.

Sacramento County supervisor Roger Dickinson being introduced by Bill Camp. The last time I saw Roger Dickinson, he was explaining the many cuts that would have to be made in the Sacramento County budget if voters in November voted against continuing the utility tax that they currently pay. The utility tax raises $16 million annually and pays for such things as parks and recreation, animal care and regulation, code enforcement, public health and welfare, and public safety (jails, neighborhood policing and patrol, etc.). If you don't want to experience cuts in these services, then vote to hang onto this tax! Also, watch the wording when you vote-- be sure you vote to keep the tax and these valuable public services, which might include your job if you work for the county. And thanks for explaining it to us, Roger!

Various attitudes towards having one's picture taken while contemplating food...

Benta, a physical therapist from Kaiser Roseville is wondering why she isn't a member of Local 250. Morgan Gay, a Local 250 organizer is explaining how that happened and how she can change it. Hope you are a member by the next Labor day picnic, Benta!

Bill Camp and a mystery man who appears throughout this site, but we don't know his name! He is clearly well thought of by Bill Camp, and we will get this information!
