At a certain point in the proceedings, I wondered how I could isolate what was "OK" for a hospital employee to view in their workspace and what was forbidden. After our photos were removed, we had a blank canvas on which to experiment. A newspaper was hung whose featured story: "Health care in peril, officials say" seemed to be appropriate for a hospital setting. This posting survived the weekend but had disappeared by 0930 hours on Monday morning.

A trip to the hospital cafeteria, however, revealed the above newspaper page taped to the wall next to the cash register. It featured the Sacramento Kings basketball team. Next to the newspaper were photographs of individual members of the Kings, and a Kings' official shirt. Why was it OK to have photos of the Kings on public display, but not OK to have pictures of employees on display in their own work areas? I then walked to the entrance of the cafeteria, where I found photos of the "Employees of the Month" featured prominently. Was it only OK to have your photograph seen if you were the Employee of the Month?

Another perspective: On the other side of "our" partition was the desk of the clerical supervisor. Her side of the partition featured two colored eggs, the gift of an employee on the eve of the Chinese Year of the Horse.

I had also been given a colored egg to celebrate the Year of the Horse, but I kept it in my art room at home. I wondered if it would be OK if we hung this identical egg on "our" side of the partition. It proved to be not OK and subsequently disappeared.
